Summary
EXPERTS-ALS - a flagship programme of the UK MND Research Institute - is an experimental medicine platform that brings together 11 MND centres across the UK. It will rapidly testing potential treatments in a small number of people living with MND, leveraging the neurofilament light chain (NfL) biomarker in blood to rapidly assess a treatment's impact on disease progression. Treatments that are able to significantly reduce NfL levels will be fast-tracked into large-scale clinical trials
EXPERTS-ALS is underpinned by a massive £11 million investment, with £8 million from the NIHR and £1 million each from My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, LifeArc and the MND Association. We’re pleased to be working with other funders to enable this important work.
Why this research is important
This innovative approach will help to identify promising potential MND treatments and accelerate them towards clinical trials. It will help to ensure that our finite MND resources are spent wisely and give us the best possible chance of delivering successful trials in the coming years.
