Summary

Time to diagnosis in MND is often far longer than it needs to be. As new treatments emerge, it’s more important than ever to diagnose people as early in the disease course as possible. Challenges to diagnosis include lack of confidence amongst medical professionals in making MND diagnosis and lack of recognition of MND symptoms in some cases. This project was initiated by My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, following early diagnosis being voted a key focus area in its 2023 Catalysing a Cure Strategy. It will be facilitated by the global MND organisation, The International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations, who will work with a global expert faculty to develop training material to help medical professionals spot and understand early signs of MND to help speed up the diagnosis process.

Why this project is important

The goal of this project is to have a training course that is universally applicable that would give young doctors, secondary care specialists and other healthcare professionals the knowledge and tools to empower them to make earlier MND diagnoses or earlier referrals to MND specialists.
