Summary

Evidence has shown that proteins, called JNKs, can become overactive in MND and cause motor neurons to “self-destruct”. Drugs targeting the JNK pathway have previously been developed and explored in cancer. In this project, Dr Laszlo’s team will test and optimise novel drugs that can target the JNK pathway, to assess their ability to keep motor neurons alive in MND. These new drugs have several benefits compared to those that have been previously studied.

Why this research is important

This research will help us understand whether the JNK pathway could be a good target for MND and could open up a novel avenue of potential treatment options to slow progression of MND. The project is being supported by both Dundee Drug Discovery Unit and Protenic, a European biotechnology company, strengthening the potential of any new drugs to be rapidly translated into the clinic.
