Leeds Rhinos kindly invited the Weir family to the recent Magic Weekend at St James’ Park, Newcastle, as part of their tartan shirt Magic Weekend campaign, which paid tribute to Doddie.
The tartan shirts were in recognition of Doddie’s role as a mentor to Leeds Rhinos legend, Rob Burrow, following his MND diagnosis and the friendship between the two.
The gesture was especially poignant as Newcastle is where Doddie played with the Newcastle Falcons.
Rob and my dad had such a connection, albeit coming together in such tough circumstances. I have seen hundreds of the Rhinos Magic shirts around the stadium and he'll be looking down on us from up there giving us a wry smile.
Hamish's brother Ben added, "I think it is pretty sweet for Rob Burrow and dad to be so close. I think that is what has brought this kit together. Rob being a Leeds Rhinos legend and dad being a friend of his, Leeds Rhinos feels like such a big family and for dad to be introduced into that and being part of it with this kit is phenomenal."
