Fundraising, MND stories
We are incredibly proud that Lewis Moody has chosen to support us by taking on a remarkable 500 mile cycling challenge in June.
Over seven days, Lewis will ride from Newcastle to Twickenham, finishing at Allianz Stadium ahead of the Gallagher PREM Final. He will lead ‘The Lewis XV’ - a team of former teammates, rugby legends, close friends, and family - including his sons, Dylan and Ethan, making this an especially personal challenge. The team will be stopping at key places from Lewis’s life and career, including his first club, Bracknell, his school, Oakham, and his former clubs Leicester Tigers and Bath.
Following his diagnosis with motor neuron disease (MND) in October last year, Lewis has taken time to understand the MND community and the urgent need to accelerate progress. We are honoured he has chosen to campaign for us and support our vision of a world free of MND - a vision first driven by Doddie, whose determination continues to inspire everything we do.
Every day people are diagnosed with this brutal disease that can move fast. Families are living with uncertainty and fear, people lose their ability to walk, talk, eat and breathe. For 98% of people living with MND, there have been no new treatment options for decades, which simply isn’t good enough. Our goal is simple: faster routes to effective treatments, and we will achieve that by funding the smartest, most efficient MND research.
Lewis Moody MBE said: “Since retiring from playing in 2012, I’ve taken on a fundraising challenge every year, and I’m determined to do the same in 2026, despite living with MND. I don’t know how many more opportunities I’ll have to push myself in this way, which is why taking on this 500-mile cycling challenge now feels so important as I look to support the fight against the disease.
“But this is about far more than the miles. Like so much of life, it’s about people - mates coming together, supporting each other, finding strength in camaraderie, and really hoping we can make a difference."
Above all, it’s about using that energy, and the platform I’m fortunate to have, to make as big an impact as possible for everyone living with MND – raising vital funds for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, accelerating progress, and helping drive the change and outcomes this community so urgently needs. I want to do everything in my power to make a difference, building on the work of giants who have gone before me.
Our CEO, Nicola Roseman said: “Lewis’s courage in taking on this challenge while living with MND is truly inspiring. He embodies the same spirit that Doddie showed every single day - a determination to use his platform to change the outlook for everyone affected by this devastating disease. We are incredibly grateful to Lewis, his family, and everyone involved in The Lewis XV for supporting our vision of a world free of MND.”
