Our response to new research which suggests strenuous exercise increases the risk of motor neuron disease in people who are genetically vulnerable.

“My Name'5 Doddie welcomes research looking into the link between exercise and motor neuron disease (MND). MND is a complex disease and, whilst these days we have a much greater understanding of the genetics involved, the link between genes and environment / lifestyle factors is not well understood and studies such as this certainly help us unravel the complexities further. However the study does not state that exercise is a risk in all forms of MND and what risk exists is very subtle. The theory is that excessive exercise is only potentially detrimental in people who already carry a pattern of risk genes for MND. The benefits of exercise far outweigh the risks of developing MND but, intriguingly, the study may provide the basis for further research which can provide exercise advice for those who are already carry the MND risk genes and therefore personalising the approach.

We look forward to continuing our work with collaborators on further research in this and other areas”.
