Scott had a great many gifts and he shared them generously with us all.
An exceptional rugby player, he was a world class centre who served his club, country and the Lions with pride, passion and courage. He was a charity champion, contributing enormously to the work of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. But above all Scott was a proud family man, a devoted husband to Jenny and a loving father to Corey and Kerry-Anne.
His contribution to the teams he played for went beyond the rugby pitch – he was literally always at the centre of things, lifting spirits (again literally!) and inspiring all around him.
It was my great pleasure to work alongside Scott both as a broadcaster with ITV and as a fellow charity campaigner with My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
Behind the mic, Scott helped bring rugby to life, injecting energy and enthusiasm, weaving in Greek mythology with the odd Latin quote or phrase and some nugget of Roman history if we were in Rome! He had a rare ability to combine knowledge, humour and mischief with a warmth and professionalism that was respected throughout the industry.
Travelling with Scott was enormous fun and like so many of his friends, colleagues and teammates, I have dozens of memories of long lunches, epic nights out, day trips and matches in far flung locations.
His impromptu whisky tasting on a day trip to Mount Fuji certainly perked up a rather tedious bus journey, while our karaoke sessions in Tokyo still make me smile. He was at the heart and soul of every gathering, first to kick start the singing and always mindful of including everyone in the fun.
From Paris to Rome, Cardiff to Dublin, Yokohama to Melbourne and a great many places in between, you could rely on Scotty to find that perfect bistro or bar, and it was always special when Jenny came along too – beautiful people who were a pleasure to spend time with.
Scott’s tireless work for charity was inspiring. He put his heart and soul into so many good causes involving mental health and motor neuron disease and served as an enthusiastic board member and Chair of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
When our great friend Doddie was diagnosed with MND, Scott immediately stepped forward to help and played a vital role in establishing the charity. He was always on hand with ideas, providing wise counsel and using his boundless energy to enable us to grow into the charity we have become today.
He used his limitless contacts to benefit the Foundation and with friends around the world, helped promote our fundraising far and wide.
A huge fan of the Hong Kong Sevens, Scott was a regular visitor and only last year hosted Kathy and I as we enjoyed a few days in his company and attended our annual fundraising dinner. A boat trip, involving lunch and an impromptu swim in the South China Sea was just one of the many highlights…
It is impossible to think about Scott without smiling, and we will all cherish the times we shared.
Sending our love and best wishes to Kerry-Anne, Corey and the whole family, we will miss him enormously.
