Genius Brewing donates £5,000 to Scottish rugby legend’s My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
For every new business cashflow is a challenge but for Genius Brewing, pledging #5p4Doddie from every beer felt like a ‘must do’. In the week of the Doddie Weir Cup fixture between Wales and Scotland at the Principality Stadium, co-founders Jason Clarke and Charlie Craig handed a cheque for £5,000 to Doddie’s former Scotland teammate Scott Hastings at Indigo Yard in Edinburgh.
Doddie Weir won 61 caps for Scotland and toured with the 1997 Lions; giving his all in the #5 jersey. Now suffering from Motor Neurone Disease, his My Name’5 Doddie Foundation aims to raise funds for MDN research and to make a difference to the lives of those battling the disease. Genius Brewing became an Official Fundraising Partner in May, donating 5p from every can of Gen!us to Doddie’s noble cause.
The UK’s first ‘light’ craft lager, Gen!us was launched in April with a mission to make responsible drinking more pleasurable. At 3% ABV and only 72 calories per can, Gen!us has less calories than an apple. “We’re all trying to live healthier lifestyles now; more exercise and less alcohol, fat, sugar, and salt,” notes Jason Clarke. “Today’s drinkers want quality but they’re also thinking about their waistlines or the ‘morning after’”, added Craig. “With just one unit of alcohol per can, Gen!us is all about smart drinking.”
Beer and rugby have always been natural teammates. Clarke played rugby with and against Weir, “Doddie’s a great guy. His MND diagnosis is tragic but his foundation has already had a huge impact in raising awareness. People are realising how many lives it touches.” Clarke’s wife’s father died of Motor Neurone Disease when she was only seven while Craig’s favourite former school teacher is now also suffering.
“Today’s first contribution to Doddie’s foundation is a proud moment,” says Clarke. “We’d like to thank Gen!us drinkers for supporting #5p4Doddie and hope that every rugby club in Scotland will have Gen!us at the bar to help continue our fundraising.”
Scott Hastings, Chairman of My Name'5 Doddie Foundation was delighted to receive the cheque. "Today marks our one-year anniversary since the foundation was granted charitable status. We are very grateful to Genius Brewing for their fantastic support of Doddie's Foundation and we will use these funds to research a cure for MND and to support those affected by this terrible disease."
