Hawkes Shield Festival Success

With the sun shining and a small army of volunteers* working hard in preparation, Wood Lane was glistening for the annual “Hawkes Shield” festival.

Having invited Vets teams from Teddington’s Fat Stags (with the help of Bulldogs RFC) and Grasshoppers, the club arranged a triangular tournament, 2 games each, 20 mins each way.

Hat’s off to all the players, the rugby itself was not the lazy, slow affair you might expect from Vets rugby, it was hard and aggressive with some excellent skill on show.

With the Hawkes Shield being fully revitalised, it was decided to try to raise funds for a worthwhile charity each year, this season's charity is “myname5doddie.co.uk” , the MND charity set up by Former Scottish International and British & Irish Lion, Doddie Weir who is siffering from MND. Doddie visited the club as a guest of Dave Wards around 8 years ago and immediately entered the hearts of the Old I’s given his raconteur and appreciation for all things rugby regardless of whether you play out of a tin hut in Wood Lane or have had the honour of pulling on an international or the great red jersey of the Lions. The club has remained in touch with Doddie and he was delighted to hear we are still going strong!

A huge thank you to donations from Raccy, The Royal Oak, Dave Ward, Tony Winslade and a post humous one from The Goat, it meant all costs of the day were covered and each match fee, raffle donation / ticket purchased and pint drunk went directly to the charity.

Spectators on the side line either retired or injured and those that could not make it down on the day also decided to pay their match fee, as a result of all this hard work, the event raised £1,940 for “myname5doddie.co.uk”.

Thank you to everyone who attended, helped, donated, paid a match fee, bought a raffle ticket it was a proud day to call ourselves Old Isleworthians.
