The Hebridean Way

Mark Wylie, a farmer from Luss, Loch Lomond has just cycled solo along the length of The Hebridean Cycle Way to raise funds for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation.

Here is Mark's report on his cycle of discovery.

On May the 27th I caught tghe Oban train at Helensburgh Upper then sailed to Barra on Calmac ferry -  5 and a half hours at sea! Then cycled to Vatersay beach on the first night to start my adventure.

the following day I left very early through Barra, Eriskay, South Uist to Benbecula. The weather was unseasonably cold and the wind uncharacteristically coming from the north, however it was dry and bright and the next day saw me reach South Harris through North Uist, Grimsay and Bernaray.

Thursday was hardest stage - 78 miles to Uig Bay with ice cold headwinds, up to 30mph over the mountains, needless to say I slept well that night!! A 60mile sprint would finish the route and Friday brought monsoon rains - I just kept pedalling and arrived at the lighthouse at the northern tip of Lewis at 2:45pm.

People donated money and whisky all along route the back home via Skye to Mallaig and finally I took the West Highland train back home.

11 islands 6 causeways 5 ferries and 2 trains  - £3000 raised!

Many thanks Mark - and you can still support his efforts by visiting his Just Giving page:
