Volunteer Your Time

Volunteering with Team Doddie

The community we have around us is invaluable in raising awareness and vital funds to support research to achieve a World Free of MND.

We often attend events, be it to man a merchandise stand, cheer on marathon runners or speak about MND and the work the Foundation does. We are looking for volunteers to help at and attend events as representatives of the Foundation.

As a Team Doddie volunteer, you will:

  • Join a community of likeminded individuals committed to supporting My Name’5 Doddie Foundation across the UK
  • Receive a welcome pack including t-shirt
  • Be contacted when events are taking place in your local area (no minimum requirement of hours)
  • Receive appropriate training and support
  • Be invited to a Team Doddie volunteer group chat to share your experiences
  • Have a dedicated point of contact at the Foundation at all times
  • Be a valued member of the team, helping the Foundation to fund vital research to find effective treatments for MND

Frequently Asked Questions

Each opportunity to volunteer with My Name’5 Doddie Foundation may be different from the next. You may find yourself manning a merchandise stall at a fair or sporting event, accepting a donation at a cheque presentation, selling raffle tickets or cheering Team Doddie runners on at a marathon.

You can let us know if there are any specific events you would, or would not, like to get involved with when you register your interest.

Volunteering roles with the Foundation are very flexible, and there is no required commitment to a certain number of hours or days volunteering over any period of time. Ideally, you will have some evening and weekend availability as we are so often supporting at events out with traditional working hours.

We will regularly share details of events coming up in your area and it is up to you which you kindly offer your time to support. Events could range quick half hour at a local club/organisation to accept a cheque and pose for a photo opportunity up to 5/6 hours (with breaks of course) helping to man a stand at the Royal Highland Show, for example.

Our Community and Volunteer Fundraiser, Mia, is always on hand to answer any questions you have about your role and upcoming events. After your initial expression of interest, she’ll be in touch to chat through the role and again to officially welcome you to our Team Doddie volunteer community. You’ll be invited to have a call, or meet in person where possible, with Mia for a brief info session and from there we’ll regularly keep you up to date with a volunteering opportunities and updates via a newsletter.

Absolutely not! Although previous experience may be useful, we welcome applications from people looking to build their skills or get involved in a charity for the first time. Essentially, so long as you are keen to get stuck in, enthusiastic and friendly, we would love to have you as part of the team. We will provide you with all the resources you need along with a briefing before each event.

If you are looking to take up a volunteer speaker role with us, we’ll also provide you with access to a speech outline and a pre-recorded video of this in action for your reference. This can be changed to fit your own personal style, and we are always on hand for you to have a practice run through to!

We will ask all applicants to provide 2 references, as well as to sign a volunteer agreement if you are going to officially join our volunteer program.

Yes, we’ll cover all reasonable out of pocket expenses. This includes food, when an event covers a mealtime, and any travel costs.

If you decide to drive to an event, it is the responsibility of a volunteer to ensure that their insurance covers them for driving to and form a place of volunteering.

Yes! When you are officially registered as a volunteer with us, we’ll send you out a welcome pack to get started. This will include a t-shirt and ID badge to wear to events as well as leaflets, collection boxes, pens, stickers, and badges. Keep in touch with the team as an event approaches, as we may send you some bigger items to take along e.g. a roller banner or tablecloth.

A snapshot of events where our volunteers have supported the Foundation in the past are below:

  • Cheque presentation, photo opportunity and short acceptance speech at rugby club
  • Selling merchandise and raffle tickets at Edinburgh’s Whisky Festival
  • Scanning tickets and welcoming guests to the Dodcast @ Murrayfield
  • Assisting with the set up and pack down the Royal Highland Show
  • Bucket collection at the Doddie Weir Cup 2024

In 2024, we would love to see volunteers support us with similar and further opportunities such as:

  • Clapping and encouraging runners at a cheer station at a local marathon event
  • Attending events as a representative of the Foundation in a ‘guest speaker’ capacity for up to 15mins
  • Joining somewhat of a ‘production line’, fuelled by snacks and Christmas music, as we pack Christmas cards

Hit the ‘register your interest’ button above or click here to fill out the form. We cannot wait to hear from you.
