Could you be our next trustee?

09 October 2025

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that we deliver our vision: a world free of MND. We need driven and proactive individuals to join us. Could this be you?

Applications close 31 October 2025. Read on for application details.

The role

Trustees set the strategic direction of My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, ensuring we have a clear strategy, and that we are progressing in line with our vision. Equally important, they support and challenge our executive team to grow and thrive.

What we are looking for

We are looking for two new trustees who can bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. We want to hear from people with a background in the following areas:

  • Finance
  • Business
  • Fundraising
  • Media and communications

You do not need previous governance experience – we will provide a full induction and training for the right candidates.

Personal skills and qualities

  • Enthusiasm for our vision – a world free of MND.
  • Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees, and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise sound independent judgement, and work effectively as a board member.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • A commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Responsibilities

Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees work together for the good of the charity in line with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) https://www.oscr.org.uk.

  • Support and provide advice on our purpose, vision, goals and activities.
  • You must act in the best interests of the Foundation and with care and diligence.
  • Oversee and understand the Foundation’s finances. Review and approve financial statements.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
  • Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
  • Provide support and challenge the CEO in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
  • Keep abreast of changes in the Foundation’s operating environment.
  • Contribute to regular reviews of the Foundation’s own governance. Attend board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
  • Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect the Foundation’s interests, and collectively manage conflicts of interests.
  • Contribute to the broader promotion of the Foundation’s aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts. As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Terms of office

  • Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office, renewal for two further terms to a maximum of nine years.
  • This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Time commitment

Four board meetings annually. Currently, meetings are a mixture of remote and in-person, usually in Edinburgh.

Committee membership

There are three committees – Finance and Audit, Governance and Nomination, and Remuneration, which you will be asked to contribute to.

Interested?

Please email a supporting statement and CV to the Chair of our Governance and Nomination Committee, Dr Annabel Howell at vicechair@myname5doddie.co.uk before 31 October 2025.

We expect interviews to take place before the end of the year.
