Rob Wainwright, Mark Beaumont and Tom Leefe plan to pedal with a Calcutta Cup match ball from Murrayfield to Twickenham on 14th March for an epic 500 mile, 48 hour ride. We will be donating £1 for every mile we ride, and would ask all cyclists joining us to do the same. 100% of money raised will go to the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation for MND research.
Why are we putting ourselves through this? In Rob’s words, “In attempting to ride 500 winter miles in 48hrs and keep up with a record breaking cyclist 2 decades my junior, I am challenging my body while I still can, inspired by the spirit of an old friend for whom such challenges may now be in the past, but who fights MND with a fortitude I can only aspire to.”
How you can get involved:
1. Join us on your bike. We plan a Grand Depart from Murrayfield at 2pm on Thursday 14th, cycling via Edinburgh Airport to see off the Scottish team, and then heading on a leisurely 40 mile route to Stirling, where you may like to hear Mark talk about his Around the World in 80 Days adventure at the MacRobert Centre. While Mark gets prepared for that, Rob will be loading up with carbs at the Muircot Farm Bistro and would welcome some company over his meal.
At about 9.30 pm Mark, Tom and Rob will be setting off in earnest on the main body of the ride, pointing their bikes south towards Twickenham, with 40 hrs to get to there. We would love riders to join us en route as we pedal south through your patches, but must point out that participation will be at your own risk and with your own logistics - this is not a catered event, it is Mark and Rob on a very long ride! Given our tight schedule, after the first 40 miles to Stirling the Pirate Code will apply. We also suspect that the quality of our chat will decline dramatically over the course of the 2 days, but will endeavour to raise a grateful smile minimum. Or you might catch us after a double expresso…. And if you could donate or get sponsored £1 per mile towards My Name5 Doddie Foundation, that is ultimately what this is all about. Donations can be made at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Doddie500
2. If you cannot join us on the road in person, luckily you can still take part virtually. Set yourself a 500 mile challenge, on your own or in a team with family or friends in support of Doddie. Download the trac4good app and join the Doddie 500 challenge there, uploading all your exercise miles, your steps, your dog-walking, whatever. Again donations to MN5DF can be made by text, or you can set up your own fundraising page at Justgiving…. A headband signed by the Big Fella himself will be available to all those who fundraise more than £200.
3./ If you can’t join us in person or virtually, you can still support us by donating through https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Doddie500. It goes without saying that all support will be very much appreciated. 100% of the funds raised will go to MN5DF, funding research to find treatments for this terrible condition.
