Nick, living with MND, completes a 444 mile cycle for MND charities

25 July 2024

Following a diagnosis of motor neuron disease (MND) in June 2023, Nick Apperley is ‘Doing More in ‘24’, which, alongside spending time with his wife Jill, family and friends, has so far included a 444 mile cycle from Suffolk to Sennen in Cornwall.

Nick and his team completed the challenge last month, starting on 9 June in Suffolk, and finishing in Sennen on the Cornish coast on 15 June.

As well as raising awareness of MND, Nick’s cycle has so far raised over £37,000 and counting for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and other charities, including MND Association and ChallengingMND.

Nick has previously organised cycling challenges for various other medical related charities. Following his diagnosis of motor neuron disease last year, Nick has been keen to continue these fundraising efforts - now for MND charities - by getting out on his tricycle.

The route was a meandering one, seeing Nick cycle from his home village of Ufford in Suffolk, travelling west across the country, finishing along the Atlantic Coast Road from St Ives to Sennen.

Following the completion of the 444 mile cycle, Nick’s village came together to host a summer ball in honour of his fundraising. A charity auction was also held, raising a further £10,000 for MND charities.

Reflecting on his challenge, Nick said: “Very much feel that while I am doing an activity I love in cycling (tricycling), it gives Jill a lift that I’m concentrating on doing the things I can do, rather than reflecting on what’s gone. Hopefully that is something that is also easing the MND journey for her and our boys.”
