Doddie was honoured by the Rugby Union Writers Club at their annual dinner in London last week. Club chair, Sarah Mockford, presented him with the club’s Special Award and said:
"The Rugby Union Writers’ Club Special Award acknowledges an individual who has given outstanding service to the game. It is at the discretion of the club whether there is a worthy recipient and the award is not presented every year. Previous winners include Francois Pienaar, Sir Ian McGeechan, Brian O’Driscoll and Jonny Wilkinson.
The club wanted to recognise Doddie Weir in 2018 not only for his outstanding achievements in the game but for his efforts in increasing awareness and fund-raising for MND since being diagnosed. He is truly one of rugby’s great characters – as he emphasised with his words on stage at the dinner."
