Kirsty Macquarie joined the Foundation as a volunteer in June 2024, after the death of her husband from MND in 2021. Since then, Kirsty has thrown herself into as much as possible, offering a regular afternoon to support the team, helping at a volunteer office admin day, as well as supporting at Edinburgh Whisky Festival, the Doddie Duck Race at Dalkeith Country Park, and the Melrose Sevens. Kirsty is also due to join us at the Edinburgh Art Fair later this year, and is looking to join our volunteer speaker programme.
“I became a volunteer for the Foundation to give something back to the MND community for all the support I received when my husband was diagnosed.
“I’ve enjoyed attending events to support selling the merchandise and I’m also running the Cardiff half-marathon for the Foundation in October. My highlight so far has been the opportunity to attend Parliament.”
To anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer Kirsty says: “Volunteering for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation is fun, fulfilling and rewarding. Just go for it! I was unsure to start with, as it was out of my comfort zone. I’m quite shy but everyone made me feel so welcome. The team are so reassuring and easy to talk to.”
