Mount Kilimanjaro

Great mates since they were teenagers, Simon, Adi and Peter (now all 60) have teamed up through a common connection to MND. At the beginning of October, they will take on a 430km+ mountain bike ride from Kilimanjaro to the coast of Tanzania. This is a rugged and hilly off-road trek, mostly staying under canvass and hopefully avoiding the wildlife! In addition, and in retrospect rather foolishly, Peter also agreed to climb Kilimanjaro the week before the bike ride to add to the challenge…….”it seemed like a good idea at the time”!

Peter has raised funds in the past for MND Association via the Malcolm Gunter Foundation. Malcom was a former colleague and friend who was diagnosed with MND in the spring of 2017 and passed a year later after a brave fight with the disease. A group of Malcolm’s friends from the property world, and his family set up the foundation in honour of this wonderful man and have subsequently raised nearly £200K to support a variety of MND charities.

Adi has a personal connection to Doddie and has shared a few drinks with him in the past - apparently, trying to keep pace with the big man is not to be advised! Adi, through various business activities, has contributed to the My Name’5 Doddie campaigns, and not being a regular cyclist, is completely unaware of what lies ahead!

Simon’s Father, David, sadly died from MND 25 years ago this month. When he was diagnosed, it was the first time any of the family had heard of the disease and the impact of the illness was immense – very little awareness or support. Hence, he is extremely supportive of the efforts made by the Doddie Weir and Malcolm Gunter Foundations in raising the profile, supporting families and funding research.
