Matt's Isle of Wight Row
Monday 18 September 2023 to Sunday 24 September 2023
Isle of Wight, England
Matthew Armstrong is rowing around the Isle of Wight in the third week of September, the date this voyage begins is weather dependant. Hear why he is taking on this challenge for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation below.
"In December 2021, James Clarke a friend and work colleague was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, a severely life shortening neurological disorder for which there is no cure.
Since James' diagnosis, many people have taken on a variety of challenges to raise as much money as possible for research into the fight against this cruel disease. During the Summer I plan to row single handed around the Isle of Wight as my contribution to this very worthy cause.
I have sailed around the island on numerous occasions, usually on a yacht in the company of friends. To do so in a small, open rowing boat is very different, fraught with danger, battling strong tides and winds, not to mention the hazards when encountering commercial shipping. It will not be easy, but if it were everyone would be doing it, which probably explains why, to date only 1 person has done it. I expect it will take around 18 hours to complete the 60 mile voyage.
There has to be a cure for MND, but research into it is massively underfunded, that’s where we come in and can try to do something about it. I would be so grateful for you support, anything you can donate would be much appreciated."
